CENTERBURG — When the Centerburg Trojans met the Pleasant Spartans in girls basketball action earlier this season, the Trojans clawed their way to a victory.
On Thursday, they met again — with the season on the line.
And this time, there was no happy ending for the Trojans.
Pleasant outscored Centerburg 8-1 in the final 5 1/2 minutes of Thursday’s sectional final to pull off a 41-34 upset over the defending district champs.
For the Trojans and their fans, no words could describe the feeling of disappointment.
“We didn’t come out with the mental toughness to win the game tonight,” said Centerburg head coach Todd Nauman.
Having trailed most of the game, Centerburg tied the game at 33 with a 3-pointer by senior Lindsey Daniels. The shot erased an eight-point deficit and brought much of the crowd at Centerburg’s high school gym to its feet.
From that point, however, the Trojans managed to get off just four shots — missing all four — and turned the ball over four times.
