HEATH — The first day of the Division II district wrestling tournament was unkind to most of the Utica and Highland wrestling team members.
But, for Highland’s Jeremy Johnson, it was a pleasant night.
Johnson won both his matches Friday at Heath to inch within one match of advancing to state competition.
The Highland 170-pound senior struggled out of the gate, getting taken to the mat twice in the first period of his match with East’s Andrew Gibbons. But, he battled back with a reverse and some back points to close the gap in the second. Then, he got a takedown with less than one minute remaining in the match to advance.
“Jeremy did not wrestle real well, but he won. That’s all that matters at this point,” said Highland coach Adam Gilmore.
