PHILO — Ten area Division III wrestlers from four local schools made the journey to the tiny village of Philo for this year’s Division III Central District wrestling tournament. Nobody came home with a state berth this year. There were, however, a few who came close.

A pair of Danville wrestlers placed sixth. Cade Mickley and Jamarcus Hershberger fell just one win shy of a trip to the state. Each took a different path to get their district placing.

“We were happy and, at the same time, disappointed that they didn’t have a chance to do better,” said Danville coach Keith Kaufmann. “Everyone works hard at that point and not everyone can get there.”

The 132-pound Mickley was set to take on Northridge’s Shane Mulligan in a Mid-Buckeye Conference showdown, but it never happened. Mickley, who was battling injuries, had to default and settle for sixth place.

“I hurt my left shoulder at sectionals the week prior,” said Mickley. “I was illegally slammed on it. It was sore and tight.”

Mickley had started out the day in the championship bracket, losing in the second round to Bishop Hartley’s Grant Rathburn, 8-6. After dropping down to the consolation bracket, he scored a major decision (15-5) on Cuyler Ledyard of Catholic Central, then defeated Zac Sowers of Union Local, 11-4. In the consolation semifinals, the injured Mickley lost to eventual third place finisher Dakota Mays of Nelsonville-York on a technical fall which left him battling for fifth.
