COLUMBUS — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets scored a pair of pins and sustained a minor upset in Thursday’s championship preliminary round of the 2013 OHSAA State Wrestling Championships held in the Jerome Schottenstein Center at The Ohio State University.
Mount Vernon’s 113-pound Dakota Riley, who placed third in the 106-pound category last year, started what he hopes will be a climb to the top of the podium with a second-period pin over Alec Logsdon of Lebanon at 1:26 in the second period.
Riley went on the attack immediately, using his quickness to avoid getting caught.
“I came out and I wanted to show people that I was ready for this tournament — ready to win it,” said Riley. “That way, they won’t doubt me anymore.”
Riley used his strength after grabbing a 4-1 first period lead. In the second period, he wrapped up Logsdon around the chest, pinning him.
In today’s championship quarterfinal round, Riley takes on Armando Torres of Elyria, who won a 7-2 decision over Jimmy Ferritto of Cleveland St. Ignatius on Thursday.
“I’ve got a tough match but I think I’ll be ready for it,” said Riley.
The 11,084 fans in attendance witnessed the first state win by a Mount Vernon freshman. Lane Hinkle (132) pinned Dejon Moss of Maple Heights with only eight seconds left in the third and final period.
