WORTHINGTON — It’s how you finish that counts.
At Thursday’s Division III district semifinal, held at Worthington Christian Middle School, the Freddies put that adage into practice.
Fredericktown shot 9-for-10 from the free-throw line in the final minutes to hold off a late Bishop Ready rally and win, 46-37.
Most of the shots were part of a 10-2 run to close out the game, after the Silver Knights had trailed by one point with three minutes to go.
Courtney Jackson was 6-for-6 in that stretch. Jackson had just one field goal in the game — on a shot in the first period — but in the fourth, she drew fouls whenever she drove the lane.
“We’ve had a couple of loses where we missed some free throws down the stretch,” said Fredericktown head coach Wes Elifritz. “What we told the girls at that point was to learn from this. We can hit those. It’s just a daily repetition in practice. And we know that, when the ball’s in her hands, Courtney is going to get points for us.”
“I’d been struggling with my free throws lately, but my teammates are always there to pick me up,” said Jackson. “This was a game that was going to come down to hitting those foul shots.”
Kayla Casto went 3-for-4 in the stretch. Her first shot came on a feed from teammate Emily Williams. Casto took the pass and drew a foul, hitting her shot in the process. The three-point play gave Fredericktown its biggest lead of the game, 36-27.
