MOUNT VERNON — Baseball has a unique tradition in Mount Vernon. It is expected that the high school varsity team competes for the Ohio Capital Conference title and goes deep into the Division I tournament.
Those high expectations are matched by head coach Matt Smith. As much as anyone, Smith knows what it takes to build a winning program.
“Our goals will always be the same,” said Smith. “We want to win 20 or more games. We want to win the OCC title. We want to win the district title. That’s our goals every year.”
Last year’s squad (14-13) didn’t exactly reach any lofty goals, falling in the sectional finals. This year, Smith expects his team to be ready.
And it’s no secret why.
