MOUNT VERNON — It was a game that was shortened by the run rule but lasted a week.
In the end, the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning, defeating the Franklin Heights Falcons, 12-2, in Ohio Capital Conference action.
It all started last Wednesday when visiting Franklin Heights got a quick 2-0 lead against Mount Vernon starting pitcher Jayben Martin. It finally ended Tuesday with Josh Edwards scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth with two outs.
In between, there was lightning, rain and a couple of tough losses.
When they picked it up Tuesday, Mount Vernon was more than ready. Paul Smith was brought on in relief for the Yellow Jackets, getting two quick outs in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the inning, Mount Vernon bats went right to work with the first eight batters reaching base — seven of them via a hit.
