CENTERBURG — When Centerburg Trojans pitcher Brendan Mapes was chosen to take the mound in an important late-season game against the Mid-Buckeye Conference rival Utica Redskins, he didn’t give it a second thought. He just went about his job calmly, despite the fact that Utica had won five of its last six and knocked off powerful Fredericktown in the process.

“Actually, I hadn’t paid too much attention to their record,” said Mapes. “I just kind of like to go out there and play, do my best and see what happens.”

Mapes, throwing a five-hitter, battled his way to a 3-0 victory over visiting Utica on Wednesday.
