HILLIARD — Sometimes, you run into a team that just doesn’t make mistakes.
The St. Francis DeSales Stallions looked nearly flawless in Saturday’s Division II East Region championship match. While the defense responded to nearly every attack by the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets, hitters Evan Feltz and Hunter Walsh dominated the net to lead DeSales to a 25-18, 25-22, 25-19 victory at Hilliard Davidson High School.
For the Yellow Jackets, it meant no back-to-back trips to the state semifinals. It also meant going back to the drawing board to begin next year’s quest for a state title.
“We’ve got a lot of good talent coming back,” said Mount Vernon head coach Alan Cassell, who was named East Region D-II Coach of the Year following the match. “What we need to do is utilize our summer open gyms better than we have in the past. We need to utilize those, not just for playtime, but for more consistency.”
Mount Vernon’s defense played as well as expected, with Levi Rhoades, Jake Scott and Jacob Carhart holding their own. However, Feltz, who was named East Region Player of the Year after the match, began to dominate by the midway point of the first set. By the end of Set 2, he already had nine kills.
