Smith’s walk-off single with the bases loaded and no outs gave the Freddies a narrow 3-2 win over the West Jefferson Rough Riders on Monday night at Worthington Kilbourne high school.

The win sets up a showdown with top seed Bloom-Carroll for the district title on Wednesday.

“We kept battling when we needed to,” Fredericktown coach Tom Craze said. “It’s baseball. We got the hits we needed. Give West Jeff a ton of credit, they are a good baseball team. The kids kept battling and battling. We did make a lot of mistakes we have to clean up before Wednesday. It was an exciting win.”

Both teams kept themselves in the game with solid pitching. Freddies pitcher Derek Thompson gave up zero hits and one run in four innings of work. Rough Riders pitcher Nick Ewalt went 4 2/3 innings and gave up four hits and two earned runs.
