PICKERINGTON — Despite the rain that delayed the start of Tuesday’s game, Kristin Doretich finally had her day in the sun.
Pinch running for Danville Blue Devils starting pitcher Kat Mickley, Doretich scrambled home on a passed ball in the game’s final inning to give her team a 1-0 win over the top-seeded Berne Union Rockets in their Division IV Central District semifinal softball thriller at Pickerington North High School on Tuesday.
“I was kind of scared at first but Coach was there, telling me, ‘Go! Go! Go!’” said Doretich. “I got in there and scored.”
It was the highlight of the season for someone who has received few opportunities to really shine.
“Every chance I get, I give it my all,” said Doretich. “Today, it paid off.”
Up until then, it was a scoreless deadlock. Mickley had a three hit, six strikeout gem going, but Berne Union’s Cerena Woodgeard, despite giving up eight Blue Devils hits, was able to keep pace. In the third, Danville’s Darci Lauderbaugh (2-for-4) and Becky Buckland (1-for-3) were on second and third with nobody out. Woodgeard forced a groundout, a strikeout and a popout to second.
