COLUMBUS — The Centerburg boys 4x400-meter relay team didn’t expect to make it this far.
As a group, the Trojans got faster and faster throughout the season. Their success carried them to Saturday’s finals at the OHSAA State Track and Field Championships in Columbus, where they finished eighth.
“This is an amazing feeling,” said Robert Hakes, one of two seniors on the team. “Last year was the first time we’d ever been up on a podium with our 4x400 team in regionals. So to get up on a podium in state — it’s amazing.”
The Division III boys 4x400 was one of four races with local runners in Saturday’s meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Fellow Trojan Amelia Holt finished 16th in the girls 800 final. Fredericktown’s Sarah Fowler placed third in the girls 3,200. Later in the day, Highland’s Amanda Mosier finished eighth in the Division II girls 100 hurdles.
