MOUNT VERNON — It was a busy Sunday for coach Gary Smith and the Wigal 12-under softball team.
Wigal had to play four games — all back-to-back — to secure its second straight Mount Vernon Girls Softball League tournament title. Wigal secured the championship with a 6-5 victory over CQ Construction in the finals, after beating the same team, 14-13, in the first championship game.
“The girls are tired,” said Smith. “But, they brought their ‘A’ game when they needed it.”
In sweltering 88-degree sunny conditions, the team played consecutive games starting at 10:30 a.m. After falling in the winner’s bracket championship to CQ Construction, Wigal defeated Ron Rogers, 8-3, for the losers’ bracket title. Wigal and CQ met again for the title; but had to play a second title game when Wigal won Game 1 due to the double-elimination format.
Although every player on the team took part in each game, Smith gave most of the credit to pitcher Rochelle Humphrey. Humphrey came on in relief for Autumn Smith in the first game, then pitched three straight complete games in the heat to help her team to the title.
Humphrey’s final tally in the two championship games: 12 innings, 19 strikeouts, 14 hits allowed, eight earned runs and one walk. On the day, she threw 22 innings.
Fittingly, she was one of the first to hoist the championship trophy.
