MOUNT VERNON — With the Dixie Days Tournament just a week away, the Mount Vernon softball 16-and-under team is working feverishly to put a competitive team on the field while having fun along the way.

“We put together a team that really wanted to play,” said Mount Vernon All-Star 16-and-under softball coach Mike Seese. “I came out and worked them pretty hard a few days a week for a couple of weeks. We’ve got three more practices before we get a chance to play.”

Dixie Days will run next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the competition will be plenty rough.

“Mostly we play in the Dixie Days Tournament and one or two others,” said Seese. “We’ll be going to the Fredericktown Tournament, aside from the Dixie Days. We’re like a rec team, playing against traveling teams that play 100 games a year. Sometimes, teams like ours don’t fare very well, but I think this team fits in well. I think we can give these teams a pretty good battle and give some teams some fits. Most of these girls have played at the all-star level in the last two or three years.”
