MOUNT VERNON — Although they were five outs away from advancing to the District 5 championship round, two swings of the bat doomed the Mount Vernon 11-under All-Stars.
A five-run fifth inning keyed Southwest Licking’s come-from-behind 9-6 victory against the All-Stars at Phillips Park on Tuesday evening. The loss ended Mount Vernon’s season after a successful initial run in the tournament.
“We played a good game for the most part,” head coach Bob Tiell said. “We gave up a couple of home runs late in the game, which cost us.”
Collin Dupps pitched the final four innings for the visitors. In that stretch, he gave up five hits and struck out two batters. For Mount Vernon, Kam Breckler pitched 3 1/3 innings, gave up four hits and walked two batters. Ryan Tiell pitched 1 2/3 innings and struck out three batters after Breckler departed.
“Kam gave us several good innings tonight,” Tiell said. “He gave us a chance to win the game. We eventually fell behind and could not pull it out.”
Leading the charge offensively for Southwest Licking was Brett Morrison. Morrison went 1-for-2 with two walks and three RBIs. Robby Montagnese added three hits for Southwest Licking. Caleb McNichols went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Mount Vernon, while Caleb Fry and Trey Davidson each drove in one run.
