Community pulls together for Centerburg graduates
CENTERBURG — Under a sunny, breezy sky, to slightly raucous cheers from the crowd, Centerburg’s senior class marched into Memorial Park on Saturday, determined not to let recent events mar the celebration.

What was dumber the cheating or the school board and Superintendent? Ok I agree the adults were dumber. Equal justice was surely not applied here. Does the school teach the principles of innocent until proven guilty in our society? Does the school teach anything about equal protection under the law. So many core principles have been violated by this ridiculus action of the school board. Punish the ones that are guilty don’t ever throw the innocent in with the guilty. That is a dangerous legal precedent even if it is just a high school and school board acting stupidly.
Congratulatiopns!!!! to the class of 2009,To all who had a hand in putting together this cerimony a BIG THANK YOU!!!!! This is what happens when people pull together for a cause,This is what small town america is all about,We are very proud of our kids they worked their tails off to reach this memorable point in their lives I as an alum of CHS,was very outraged by the boards decision, there were NO anwsers, just alot of backpedaling, yes cheating is wrong-agreed,but you do NOT! punish a whole class for the actions of a few From the superintendent to the school board to the principle, this whole scandal gives your school, community, two black eyes,a bloody nose and several teeth missing may a poorly handled situation like this NEVER!!!! happen again
I too am a proud parent of Centerburg 2009 graduate. I was really upset when I found out that the school board had cancelled graduation. But what really got me mad was the way I had found out. I was at our local grocery store when I was told by the cashier. This was about 11 am. on Friday. Why didn’t the school call. I was there responsibility to do so. Right now I am ashamed to to say that I live in Centerburg.. The school let the kids….the parents and the community down. It people like Jeanette Lamb and the community that needs to be commented. The school board, I hope do realize that they will more than likely loose their seats when the nex election come around. I for one will not vote for any of them. I to believe that Dorthy Holden and John Morgan should put in their resignation. They are a disgrace to their positions. I am so glad that I have no more children to put through school… Because I do believe that they would be going somewhere else. But despite it all…it turned out better than if they had had at the school. Like a told someone at the ceremony…”We don’t need that stickin’ school.” And she agreed with me. Congratulations to all the received their dipolmas and to all that had a hand in pulling this all together…
They knew who the students who were at the center of this. There was no need to punish the entire class–including kids from the vocational school–in order to make their point that cheating will not be tolerated. Pulling those 7 or 8 out and not allowing them to graduate would have driven the point home. To punish those not involved because they didn’t snitch doesn’t send a very positive message either. The Board will probably bear the brunt of this down the road at election time, as well they should for not thinking this through bette before acting.
As a proud parent of a Centerburg 2009 graduate I do not agree with the school board. Only one person performs the deed but the entire class was punished. The school board and superintendent was simply upset with the fact the the students that “knew” about the actions of one did not report it. I want everyone to think back to their high school years and decide if you were put in the same situation, would you have tattled??? I think not!! Come on people, every school district in every state in the country has cheating going on in one form or another.
I want to send my sincerest thank you to all of the Centerburg community and especially the parents of the senior class!! We all worked hard to give our children what the school would not. Our children will remember this more than any stuffy ceremony that would have been put on by our school board.
Now I hope the members of the school board will voluntarily resign and do the rest of the community a favor. We need better people with a better understanding of children to lead our schools. This does not only include our school board and superintendent but also our athletic director, Jim Stoyle.
I feel for the students that were not involved, however I support the school board’s decision to cancel the commencement. By the community putting together a ceremony, they have essentially undermined the lesson that was trying to be taught– Cheating is wrong! In this day and age, it seems fewer people believe that. But think about it–do you want to go under the knife of a surgeon that cheated in med school or get on a plane with a pilot that cheated in flight school?
