CENTERBURG — Emotions ran high during the public participation portion of the June meeting of the Centerburg Board of Education. Several parents launched personal attacks and railed against the board for canceling graduation exercises, and others spoke in support of the board.

Who exactly are the cheaters? We will never know so grouping them all and accusing them is just wrong. This Board is a group of men who need a reality check. Looking forward to the next election and hope that new, EDUCATED and QUALIFIED people are on the ballot.
Way to take a stand Centerburg BOE. Do not buckle under pressure. Ethics are eroding in this country and this painful lesson might just help the future work force stay on track. Well done BOE!

It’s time that the parents stick up for the rules and allow the school board to handle the situation. Kids have so much handed to them today that some of them do not have ethics and think they can get away with anything. Parents should be the adult and teach their kids respect.
I think the schools have it rough. The kids thinks its funny when they get out of trouble. Yes, I feel sorry for the ones who didn’t cheat and the ones that went to the career center full time this year. But come on, kids talk and they know what’s going on.
Remember these names …Centerburg doesn’t need board members like this. Please Do NOT Re-Elect them, Centerburg doesn’t need these uncaring individuals in our school system !!!
People, when you say the kids are the sole people to blame, are you really thinking about how many are innocent? When you call the entire class, “Liers and cheaters,” do you really think about how this affects the innocent students? They have no concrete proof how many students used the test or how many knew about it. And, let’s not forget about the rest of the classes because many were awere of this too. Should we take away their commencement? What about the parents and teachers who heard this rumor, and remember it was a rumor since the beginning of the year, should we fire them from the jobs? There is no real solution except to have the board members stand to apologize to those who had nothing to do with this scandal. We have some exceptional students who just graduated, but now they have to defend themselves for the mistakes of others. As adults, we are supposed to teach and be positive role models, and this national story has hurt more people than any of us know. Look at both sides, and think about your own children and if you had one graduating. Would you feel the same way?
Do you really think the parents knew what was going on? I know that I didn’t. My son attended Knox County Career Center but still did not get to graduation from his home school of Centerburg. This was just down right wrong!!
As for our school board, I took a close look at our so called representatives and the one’s with authority do not even have a college degree in any sort of educational background. They are car dealer owners, managers of factories, etc. They have also been on the board so long that they have lost touch with reality. Most of them got the position due to their family names. They are still riding on the coat tails of their parents or even grandparents. This is not surprising since the whole town in run this way. Even our athletic director is a joke. It is based on if you are from the “elite” group not on your abilities or accomplishments.
Come on Centerburg – It is time for a change!! For our school system including athletics. Let’s try to win back our good name and we can thank our school board for tarnishing what we had.
Tired of this. Tired of parents acting like babies. Disrespecting of authority babies. These parents should simply home school their kids if they don’t want to mentor respect for adults making decisions. And consequence for cheating being upheld and honored.
Parents – shame, shame, shame. If there were a way to PUNISH the parents I would support that. Really. Grow up!
And all of you who personally have chosen to make our school administrators lives “hell” recently, should apologize personally to each of them. My goodness….
Are you kidding me??? Aren’t we a nation of innocent until proven guilty? What happened to that philosophy? I’m sorry that the school board or administration were in such a rush to judgement that no one came up with the idea to administer a “new test or exam” to the student body that would have eliminated the issue and would have given them time to investigate and punish the guilty, the actual student(s) who hacked into the system. No one was smart enough to think of that as a possibility? What about postponing graduation for a few days to allow investigators to do their job?
No – better to punish everyone, punish the families, punish those extended relatives who came to celebrate with the “majority” of the non-guilty students. That was such a better idea! Isn’t it wonderful for all of the innocent students to have had their school career at Centerburg end this way!!! Good job Centerburg Board of Education. Good luck on your re-elections.
I agree with Debbie! The Centerburg Board of Education took the “high-road”.
Thank you Centerburg Board of Education for choosing to stand up to the abuse in order to do the right thing. Although it did not involve every student, this was so wide spread and the news of it came to the Board so late that there was no other option other than to ignore the situation, which would have been so wrong. If you didn’t cheat (or know about it and not tell) you can still hold your head high! Sometimes in life we all suffer for another’s wrongdoing. This was not isolated! It was at least half the class! Integrity matters…it matters a lot! What are you teaching your children by throwing this fit? Some of the parents who are upset gave the teens alcohol at their grads party. Isn’t integrity learned at thome? Thank you Board of Education. you have many supporters
Student A1 does a bad and steals test(s).
BEST CASE SCENARIO: ALL OTHER students remain silent AND REJECT opportunity to view stolen data.
RESULTS: None of the others cheated. The ceremony goes forward (perhaps sans A1) and we would not be typing at one another.
ANOTHER SCENARIO: All other students EXCEPTING STUDENT B2 who is totally unaware of the theft and offer, either
1) DO NOT VIEW stolen data, BUT KNOW & REMAIN SILENT, or
2) VIEW & USE STOLEN DATA
and ALL those students admit that B2 was unaware.
RESULTS: B2 is the ONLY student QUALIFYING for a ceremony. Student B2, parents and school agree among themselves whether to have a ceremony for one student.
FUTURE: I respectfully suggest that the next theft and offer would be met with a higher code of ethics.

This is a big wake up pill to our adults and children, Integrity and Freedom go hand in hand! If we don’t teach our youth what is expected in a free society we will become an extinct society. Thoughts to ponder ……
