The article makes it sound like they are part of the Antiques Roadshow. Their brochure identifies them as Ohio Valley Gold and Silver. I talked to Dennis who doesn’t know a whole lot about china. He was unable to tell Flow Blue from Blue Willow. He told me my great-grandmother’s china tea set wasn’t worth anything, just “made in Japan”. When I showed him the maker’s mark he said, “Unfortunately, my Japanese isn’t very good.” Any antique dealer worth his salt should know what the marks mean on anything he’s looking at. What a waste of time!

Diana: the BBB rating doesn’t mean anything. When I was a kid I worked at an auto repair shop, and we prided ourselves on our BBB A+ rating. When customers did complain we knew how to word the reply and offer a token (but worthless) “settlement” in order to keep our rating.

According to the BBB, they have an A minus rating because of ‘advertising issue(s) fround by BBB’, Nine complaints which have all been resolved. To learn more about this Roadshow or any business, check your local BBB.

It seems they buy more than they have cash on hand to handle the transactions. I don’t think that’s any different than some businesses that have cashflow problems. Poor planning but I don’t think they’re the “bogeymen.”

I think the citizens of Mount Vernon and Knox County would have been better served by a critical reporting piece – telling people exactly how badly THR operates – instead of a reprint of a THR press release.
