Fire officials are hoping a dose of calmer weather will help them gain ground in a wildfire that has scorched more than 512 square miles, or 327,000 acres, in the southern Idaho desert.

Fire roared through mountain wilderness northwest of Los Angeles on Tuesday, forcing evacuations as flames threatened about 20 structures, authorities said.
