Even though the building is currently abandoned, there really is a lot of potential. Certain sections may not be feasible for renovation and therefore removed, but other areas may be very possible. A comprehensive renovation would take the building down to the envelope (foundation, walls, roof) allowing easier access for new electrical, heating/cooling and technology infrastructure installation.

Keep the schools in the neighborhoods. While Twin Oak is an impressive facility, its location was a mistake. Where students could once walk from home to school on residential streets, they must now be bussed up a hill and away from town. Not good.

Ohio’s neighborhood schools are being lost at an extremely alarming rate. Since the year 2000, over 150 rural and community centered schools have been demolished, while others are abandoned.

While not all facilities are candidates for continued educational use, many schools could be remodeled and upgraded to provide a 21st century education.

After completing the proper independent feasibility studies, many school districts find it less expensive and a better overall value to renovate existing buildings & construct new additions than build new schools. The OSFC will also co-fund the cost of renovation up to 100% of the cost of an equally sized new building. Please have an independent feasibility assessment performed on the now vacant original Middle School. If the assessment is conducted by a resource knowledgeable in historic preservation, you may surprised by the results.

These existing schools are more than just bricks and mortar used to educate our youth. They are important neighborhood anchors that provide a tangible connection for the greater community and past, present and future generations.
