UPDATE: 4:20p.m.MOUNT GILEAD — According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, traveling at an unsafe speed for icy roads was a contributing factor to a Wednesday morning crash that took the life of a 4-month-old.

The crash occured on Ohio 299, near Camp Road, near the Morrow County line.
The driver of a minivan, Carrie Ward of Sparta, lost control on the icy road, slid sideways and struck an oncoming vehicle driven by Jimmie L. Weaver, 72, of Marengo.

Louis Ward, 4 months old, was riding in a child restraint seat in the second row of her mother’s minivan. The OSHP said the impact caused severe damage to the right side of the van and crushed the right doors over as far as the steering wheel.

Carrie Ward was transported to Mount Carmel Hospital in Columbus. Liberty Ward, 4, was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, also in Columbus. OSHP said both suffered serious injuries.

Weaver was transported to Knox Community Hospital by the Central Ohio Joint Fire District.

The crash remains under investigation.


MOUNT VERNON — A two-vehicle crash on Ohio 229 near Camp Road resulted in the death of a child and left others with injuries.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident that occurred this morning after the driver of an eastbound minivan lost control on the icy road and crashed into an sport utility vehicle traveling west.

The Central Ohio Joint Fire District responded to the accident. The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate.

    Where was the salt truck??? Who was respond on Route 3 and Fredericktown Amity Road? The County failed on duty. Was it too late to put salt on the road? I was lost control crash my car. Someone hurts, it was cause so many accidents and this was not on your news report.
