Bath salts a growing problem in county

MOUNT VERNON — Two years ago the drugs known as bath salts were virtually unknown. Today, their sale and possession has been banned in Ohio and at least 28 other states and their abuse is a growing concern to health professionals, law enforcement agencies and social workers.

    Three people died from this? How many people in the county have died from Oxycodone overdoses? I’d bet you it’s a lot more than three. How about focusing on a drug that’s doing widespread harm.

    And why not just let all these foolish people die for taking drugs!

    Ever think of that? No matter how young, how old, or how rich or poor. I’m sure everyone has heard that drugs kill the mind & body. But they insist on using them. These people apparently want to find out the hard way, so let them be an example!

    Really…..how much talking & police work does it take to prove to people that drugs are dangerous? Let them die!

      Death benefits to surviving spouses and children can be a substantial cost to society.

        Well, its much more costly to society when these crazy kids ( & grownups) that refuse to listen, cost the courts, police depts., freedom centers, & death benefits to innocent drug free drivers FAMILIES when they kill them while driving.

        This is what hurts society!!

    I hope kids realize what can happen. Obviously kids may try this or that but I think the most important thing is that they know what can happen. I think as a community we should treat it as if our kids are going to try this or that at least once and school them in the right ways. When I was in school we had D.A.R.E. and we listened, but we were simply listening to “Don’t do drugs” There was not any factual “experience” type stories, just simply cocaine is bad and this is why – you can lose your job, and blah blah blah. I think it is time we become honest with our kids about drugs and stop just giving them a fact sheet. Let them know that they can feel good but also let them know the consequences (other than death). This not only creates strong relationships between children and their parents or teachers, but can also create strong will power in our children.

      Perhaps the kids would listen to the medical consequences of ingesting cocaine from a forensic pathologist or toxicologist.

      The subject of loosing a job or being jailed is not in the talk.

        perhaps kids would listen to an ex-addict. Oh wait that’s right we don’t put money into this type of stuff just what looks good “on the outside” for the city.

    Tragic for youngsters to die so needlessly.

    It is much safer to earn a masters or doctorate in toxicology BEFORE ingesting such substances.

    The education may tempt one to refrain from such ingestion.

    Prayers for the loved ones of the decedents.

       I have known a lot of people who were very educated, but also got
      hooked on drugs. I do not believe that education is where the solution
      is at, but more education about drugs in general. We sugar coat things
      like this to our kids and what they need is the honest truth. Being
      educated and having degree’s does not mean you cannot be an addict.

        TRUE, but one may die before becoming an addict. First time binge drinking has killed more than one.

        The idea of being well informed about what one is about to ingest helps.

        If one consumes an alcoholic beverage at 5 ml / hour over a period of 150 hours, usually not a problem.
        Same beverage at 1500 ml / hour over a period of 0.25 hours can cause death from acute ethanol toxicity.

        People, including adults, have died from too much water over too short a period, which causes an electrolyte balance.

        Many who would not hesitate to ingest cocaine of unknown purity from an unknown source, would refuse to eat a Whopper that had been dropped on an germ free floor.

          You have something to say about anything & everything.  Just because you can type big words, & talk like a bigshot doesnt mean much. Homeless people can even do that.
          A real educated person is one that is a good “LISTENER”……. not a good  “TALKER”.

          So stop trying to get people to follow you. You pull your pants on the same way the rest of us do!

            Actually, I’m just another guy who not only does not think I’m an authority on everything, I KNOW that I’m not an authority on everything; and believe that I’m an authority on very little.

            I listen a lot, especially to those who are unaware of what they do not know.

            I investigated death claims on those who have accidentally and intentionally killed themselves by abusing drugs, prescription and forbidden.

            What little I do know has been learned from coroners who examined the dead and determined why they died. That and Handel’s “O’ Death, Where Is Thy Sting?” has a neat tune.

          Want to know who is the best informed person on drugs???  The ones who take them!

          Just like a robber or pik-pocket……… they know all about it, all the tricks of the trade better than anyone else.

          I disagree with not trying things. Kids are gonna do what they want. Someone does not necessarily drink once and die so you are the “abstinence” type. I am pretty sure a kid isn’t gonna wait until he gets a degree to try alcohol. I tried it from my own father’s can when his head was turned. I was 8. Would I touch the stuff now? On rare occasions. I also don’t think that cocaine is the same as a whopper on the ground. Mister I think you are confused and naive to the world. Sorry if this seems offensive but it is at least clear that you don’t know kids. Kids from all different backgrounds try drugs and try them at all different ages. They also don’t normally do research and instead LISTEN to what they hear, thus taking a day out of  daily “education” to have kids sit and talk to ex-addicts and in turn become informed I think is a much better solution. Kids listen to what they are told not what the stats are.

      Jim….. you profess to be so informed & know what is needed, why dont you run over to the freedom center, or some of those drug places around Cols. & Newark, or Mansfield & help these young people??

      Apparently they need informationnnnn on how to refrrrrrrrrrrain from drugsssss.   Pleeeease go educate them for our town.

      Or is easier for you to sit there & talk like a know it all? Dont forget to tell them the “medical consequenses” of ingesting cocain.  I’m sure that will do the trick!
