In honor of Patriot Day, the Ohio National Guard Band played for Mount Vernon Middle School students Thursday. Spc. Trevor Woznials, playing the guitar at left, is a Mount Vernon resident.

St. Vincent Elementary School held a brief rememberance ceremony Friday morning honoring those who died  Sept. 11, 2001. The flag, sent to the school by 1st Lt. Andrew Doup, U.S. Air Force, an alumni on duty in Afghanistan, was flown June 21 in Afghanistan. The flag was raised to half-staff by students, from left, Billy Davis, Sam Wendt, Chandler Talbott, Molly Burnside, Mary Arnold and Matt Arnold. The Arnolds are children of Bridget Rourke, an Army colonel serving in Military Intelligence in Iraq.

he Mount Vernon News is proud to insert an American flag in today’s edition of the News in honor of the men and women who died on Sept. 11, 2001, the men and women serving in our Armed Forces and those who have lost their lives in battle. We encourage our readers to display this flag in homes and businesses as an expression of patriotism and support.

  • Letters submitted for publication must be legible and bear the writer’s signature, address and daytime telephone number for verification.

Birth announcements

Report of babies born at hospitals other than Knox Community Hospital must be submitted in writing. Include parents’ names, address, age, baby’s sex, and date and place of birth. If either parent is under the age of 18, the signature of a parent or guardian is necessary for each of the baby’s underage parents.

Announcements should include the signature, address and telephone number of the source. Announcements may be dropped off at 18 E. Vine St., or mailed to Mount Vernon News, P.O. Box 791, Mount Vernon 43050-0791.

Flaming, trolling, soliciting, profaning, and defaming are prohibited as is hateful, racist, and personally insulting remarks.
