John Francis doesn’t seem to have much of an understanding of history, especially for someone who seems to be a fan of the Founding Fathers.  George Washington was NOT a Republican as he claims.  First of all, there were no political parties when Washington was elected.  George Washington was our nation’s only non-partisan president.  Secondly, the Republican Party was not formed until 1854.  Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president.

Facts are important because they inform our decisions.  Francis seems to struggle with the basic facts on a subject that he seems passionate about.  I hope he will be more careful with the facts while serving on City Council.

A kind note for John Francis: George Washington was not a Republican. He never officially joined any party (and besides, the GOP did not exist then). And in fact, his Farewell Address was largely a passionate persuasion against the formation of political parties. He warned of the dangers of forming political parties, that they would lead to “alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism.”

Francis doesn’t seem very bright and I’m sorry to see the second ward elect him. I think Holli Kendall would have been the better choice; she would have known Washington was not a Republican.
