I left MtV more than 50 years ago. You needed a bi-pass THEN!! It was talked about, but just like the town I live in now in Colorado, it probably won't ever come to pass. We have the same problem you do...too many big trucks going through the middle of town, which is dying because there's no place to park and no stores to shop in anyway. Maybe that's the answer. Tear down the old business district, make 4 lane highways right through the middle, and let everyone shop at Walmart. It's the store that's killed the business center anyway. Let Walmart pay for the new highway!

The new train track crossing on West High is very nice. Now both sets are smooth and easy to drive over. And the city did a wonderful job with leaf pick-up this year. They just made another pass the other day and all the leaves are gone...off the trees and now out of the yard. Thank you.

Does Mt Vernon need a bypass? It was proposed many years ago, but the 'powers to be' thought it would take away from the businesses downtown. Guess that would not be the case now.

The Coshocton Ave mess would not be the mess it is now if more fore thought was involved in the growth planning. Access roads should have been installed as the area grew.

Jeff: Unsustainable, sprawling, out-of-control development is a terrible thing. Throw-away buildings set back from the road, no sidewalks - these are things that destroy communities. Centralized and well-planned development, however, engenders all of the aspects of human existence that we should cherish: in-fill development and renovation maintain streetscapes and historical structures, buildings closer to the curb invite pedestrians, on-street parking slows traffic and makes communities safer... A further point could be made that development is a never-ending process, pushed forward by the need for "economic growth," but where will it end? When every piece of land is chewed up by parking lots?

Downtown is not congested. Far from it. And given that the ODOT study found that the majority of OH-13 northbound traffic had Mount Vernon as its destination, I don't see how such a bypass would be used. As for Asetta, their main complaint was "lack of parking", likely because their lazy customers didn't feel like parking one or two blocks away and walking (god forbid), even though they probably walk the same distance when parking at Kroger or Wal-mart. And, as I understand it, Assetta also moved because they needed more space for their wholesale operation. I don't believe they moved because of traffic, so your example doesn't support your thesis. Your thesis, however, is the same for the 1970s-era downtown "pedestrian malls," where all traffic is cut off from the downtown area and it's turned into an open-air mall. One was even suggested and planned for in Mount Vernon, but over the years ones that were implemented failed all over the country, reducing their central business districts to ghost towns. Why would you want to take away the traffic from an area where it seems necessary for business? When people drive through Mount Vernon and see, perhaps, The High or Sips and either stop in for a bite or remember it and come back on purpose, that helps our local economy as the money stays local. When people drive through on bypasses and stop at fast food chains, their money spent there mostly exits the county with minimal reinvestment. Which would you rather have?

MJ,

The signs were not purchased by the local government. The downtown Heritage Centre purchased the signs and no taxpayer dollars were spent. You can read more about that here, in a story published September 23, 2008.

A bypass is needed. One part of it needs to connect US 36 on the east side of Mt. Vernon (near Upper Gilchrist road) with the High School, Career Center, MVNU area. There is too much traffic on tiny, narrow Upper Gilchrist, New Gambier Road, Eastern Star road to 229. This needs to be a priority in the city/county...
more so than Shade tree commissions, buying possibly contaminated American National Can property or buying fancy signs pointing to downtown.

It isn't just a problem with the folks who have" pets" and don't have them spayed/neutered, there are the idiots who drop off unwanted momma cats with litters at parks etc., and these poor animals have to exist on their own, and some become ferral cats. I have had 2 small kittens who were abandoned in this way, rescued them, and had them fixed. There is a male who comes to my house every day, who I am told has fathered a lot of litters. He is "wild" enough that I can't catch him. He probably has been mistreated, and has no home. It is a complex problem. I am an animal lover, but would rather see animals "put down" rather than be abused, hit by cars, and left out in the elements trying to survive. Making that decision about who lives and who dies must be excruciatingly painful, but sometimes necessary.God bless those who care.

Has anyone here EVER lived in a large city? First, the traffic here is insignificant compared to cities like Columbus. Second, the slight traffic problems we do have here should be fixed and it WILL cause some inconvenience. Just think about how much nicer it will be when it's finished!

Wow, it amazes me that people are still so narrow minded to believe that "development" is a bad thing. Consider that if the congestion downtown was gone a business could thrive because people would be able avoid traffic not fight it. For instance, Assetta Bakery which was downtown for over two years recently left your beloved city to relocate in Fredericktown which is about 1/10 the size and somehow is doing more business than ever??
