MOUNT VERNON — When disaster strikes, they are there. American Red Cross volunteers, often working behind the scenes and out of the public eye, provide care, comfort and sometimes cash assistance to individuals and families in crisis.

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon High School boys basketball team overcame a slow start and routed the Watkins Memorial Warriors, 71-34, in Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division action at "The Hive" on Tuesday night.

MOUNT VERNON — The recent removal of all of the cats from the Knox County Humane Society Cat Shelter was done without the knowledge or approval of the humane society board of directors, according to board president David Guffey.

MOUNT VERNON — "We're working as diligently right now as we did the day it happened," said Knox County Sheriff David Barber of the Jean Davis murder investigation, now in its third week. "It remains our priority case."

JELLOWAY — An afternoon fire destroyed a large old farmhouse and left a couple and their son homeless at 21890 Ravin Road, off Ohio 3 just north of Jelloway on Monday. Owner Gary Brennstuhl was in the woods behind the house cutting wood when he saw smoke. When he got to the house, a passerby had already called the Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District.

MOUNT VERNON — After conferring with veterans service offices and commissioners in other counties, the Knox County VSO has submitted a budget request for the full millage it can request.

CENTERBURG — After a year of waiting to see what the Area Development Foundation would do for the village of Centerburg, council voted unanimously Monday night not to renew its membership.

FREDERICKTOWN — The Fredericktown Village Council finalized appointments for 2010 during the first council meeting of the year Monday evening.

FREDERICKTOWN — The Highland Fighting Scots ran into a brick wall at host Fredericktown on Saturday. The Freddies froze them out with an inspired defensive effort to win, 44-31, in nonconference basketball action.

MOUNT VERNON — After starting the season 0-2, the Mount Vernon boys basketball team was starting to find its groove, winning four in a row.

MOUNT VERNON — There have been rumors that all cats at the Knox County Humane Society Cat Shelter would be euthanized after the beginning of the year.

FREDERICKTOWN — A 14-year-old girl suffered a head injury when she slipped and fell on the ice on Knox Lake on Sunday evening.
