  Council faces tough decisions on budget
“What we have to do is come to an uneasy peace for a 2005 budget,” Finance Chairman Derk Demaree told members of City Council during budget discussions held Saturday at City Hall. That uneasy peace may include making some hard decisions about police and fire services in the city.

Johnstown schools to place bond issue on ballot
Meeting in special session Monday, the Johnstown-Monroe Board of Education unanimously resolved to place a bond issue on the May ballot. The bonds will be used for the construction of a new high school, acquiring real estate, additions and renovations to the existing elementary and current middle school facilities, and providing equipment and furnishings and site improvements.

Proposals could establish financial limitations for state, local governments
Senate Joint Resolution No. 4 introduced in the Ohio Senate on Thursday by State Sen. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, proposes to enact two new sections in Article XII of the Ohio Constitution to establish spending, taxation and other financial limitations on the state and local government subdivisions.

Sheriff killed in line of duty honored
In 1905 the first, and so far the only, Knox County law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty was Knox County Sheriff James C. Shellenbarger.

County approves grant for ag easement purchases
The Knox County Board of Commissioners on Monday approved a grant of $100,000 to be expressly used as matching funds in the application process to secure 2005 Ohio Agricultural Easement Purchases.
The $100,000 is for use only by those applicants who cannot secure private funding. Any unused portions of the $100,000 will be recovered by the commissioners.
