Seavolt, Pikaart sentenced in court
MOUNT VERNON -- Aaron Seavolt, the 23-year-old Mount Vernon man who led police on a high speed motorcycle chase this summer, was sentenced to three years of community control in Knox County Common Pleas Court this morning.

Small’s, zoning board reach agreement
MOUNT VERNON -- A federal court battle between Small’s Sand and Gravel and Howard Township has ended, but part of the suit will be returning to the Knox County Common Pleas Court for resolution.

Ohio Core initiative becomes law
MOUNT VERNON -- Gov. Bob Taft on Wednesday signed Senate Bill 311, which implements the Ohio Core initiative requiring a more demanding high school curriculum, starting with the graduating class of 2014.

Cougars topple Cedarville
MOUNT VERNON -- In a back-and-forth game between two of the heavyweights in the American Mideast Conference, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team came out on top, 84-77, over rival Cedarville in their showdown Thursday evening.

Redskins take MBC lead
UTICA -- It’s been 10 years since the 26-1 Utica High School girls basketball Final Four team stepped foot on its home court. The same night a decade later, the Redskins grabbed win no. 10 over Mid Buckeye Conference rivals Johnstown to become the lone leaders (6-0) in the race for an MBC title.

Freddies down Bulldogs
Fredericktown -- East Knox Bulldogs head girls basketball coach Daryl Uhde contributed their 53-27 loss to the Fredericktown Freddies on Thursday due to a lack of effort by his team. The Bulldogs are now 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the Mid-Buckeye Conference. Fredericktown now sits at 4-2 in the conference with a 6-3 overall record.

Scots set to host Rockets
SPARTA -- The Highland High School boys basketball team, winners of two of its last three games, play host to the Ridgedale Rockets tonight in a Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference Red Division showdown.

Jackets ready for Braves
MOUNT VERNON -- After winning its last two games easily, the Mount Vernon High School boys basketball team is looking to continue the trend asit hits the court to kick off 2007. The Yellow Jackets, who defeated Watkins Memorial, 71-44, on Dec. 21 and then handed River View a 58-39 loss on Dec. 29, are preparing for a big weekend with road games at Olentangy and Marion Harding.
