Warm weather is generally not a friend of deer hunters, but the 2006-07 deer season has been quite fruitful, despite the warmer temperatures early on. Knox County hunters have taken nearly the same number of deer thus far this season as they did last year. The season came in at the beginning of October, and will run through Feb. 4.

Hunters were excited to have the weather cool off a little around the beginning of the new year, as this increased their opportunities to harvest deer. According to Knox County Wildlife Officer Mike Miller, the season should prove to be more successful than seasons past. Current weather conditions should have hunters in the best of moods.
Local deer hunter Gabe Coleman harvested his deer during the deer gun season. He used his muzzleloader to harvest a doe. Though many hunters would have liked to wait for a buck, Coleman was happy to take the doe. Coleman completely processes his deer himself. This means that once the animal is harvested, he will skin the animal, then cut the meat up into manageable pieces. Most hunters will take their kill in to be professionally processed.
Coleman doesn’t hunt to just harvest an animal, he also hunts because he enjoys the great outdoors. He says that spending time in nature is very peaceful and calming, something many hunters find to be true.
