Newton had been reported missing after family members said he failed to return home from the Moose Lodge on High Street in Mount Vernon on Tuesday night. According to the report filed by his wife, Newton was last seen about 10 p.m. at the lodge. Family members and law enforcement began searching the area; Newton’s body was later found by a family member in the river near the viaduct.
According to police, the death appears to be accidental, but the body has been sent to Licking County for an autopsy.
“The Mount Vernon Police have no reason to believe foul play was involved, but, as in any case such as this, the department will await autopsy results and would be glad to talk to anyone with information about the case,” said Chief Mike Merrilees in a written release.
The release stated that Newton’s identity was confirmed early in the investigation but the family was told the information would not be released until this morning.
“This department stands firm behind that decision,” the statement reads.
Through a spokeswoman, who asked to remain anonymous, Newton’s grieving family said family members are still trying process the loss of their loved one, but added they wanted to thank law enforcement for searching for Newton throughout the night.
