MOUNT VERNON — Jedidiah Lang, 26, pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of involuntary manslaughter for his role in the asphyxiation death of Bernice Adkins in a Mount Vernon hotel room.
In addition to the one count of involuntary manslaughter, Lang was originally charged with first-degree voluntary manslaughter, felonious assault in the second degree, and reckless homicide in the third degree. Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher advised the court that with the family’s consent, those additional charges would be dropped in exchange for Thursday’s guilty plea.
Adkins, 29, was found dead in Room 119 of the Curtis Inn on Oct. 10, 2006. As part of his guilty plea, Lang confessed his crime to the court.
“We were in the hotel room doing drugs,” said Lang. “We got into an argument and she got violent towards me and I had choked her and laid her on the bed and left and when I came back she was dead.”
According to court records, though drugs were present in Adkins’ system, the dosages were too small to have resulted in an overdose.
Common Pleas Judge Otho Eyster ordered a presentence investigation. If convicted, Lang could be sentenced to serve one to five years in prison and face fines of up to $10,000. Lang is schedule to reappear in court for sentencing on Nov. 15 at 11:30 a.m. Lang currently remains free on a $25,000 bond.
