Sign placement creates confusion

WATERFORD — A mix-up in Waterford regarding a new stop sign at the intersection of Waterford, Levering and Quaker roads, generated some confusion this week. The intersection, which was designated by the Knox County Commissioners to be changed to a three-way stop, was accidentally changed to a four-way stop.

After being informed about the fourth stop sign, the commissioners placed a call to the Knox County Engineer’s Office and spoke to Assistant Engineer Larry Bechtel, who was not aware the mistake had been made.

The sign was ordered removed by Bechtel, and the three-way stop is now in place.

The commissioners were also concerned that the sign at the eastbound leg of Waterford Road, which was placed this week, is too far from the intersection. Bechtel agreed, and the sign will be moved closer to Levering and Quaker roads.

Waterford resident Kelly Brown, who lives at the intersection, said that many drivers, including those driving large trucks, have been “blowing through” the new signs, and that visibility and unfamiliarity with new signage may be issues.

Bechtel suggested, and the commissioners concurred, that perhaps requesting patrols by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office may help better control the intersection.

The commissioners and the engineer’s office have received input from local residents that for the most part does not favor the addition of any new stops at the intersection.

Taking a wait-and-see attitude about the new sign, the commissioners continue to seek public comments and input about the intersection. “Safety, as always, is our No. 1 concern,” said Commissioner Allen Stockberger.
