MOUNT VERNON -- The sheriff's office auctions off foreclosed properties on the county courthouse steps on Friday mornings. In recent years, the number of such properties has skyrocketed.

State fire marshal willing to work on issues
REYNOLDSBURG -- State Fire Marshal Michael P. Bell, who took the oath of office in May, has found his first 8 1/2 months in office as Ohio's 34th fire marshal rewarding and challenging. In an interview earlier this week, Bell addressed issues raised about the way the marshal's office conducts and accounts for school fire inspections, and gave insight into what he hopes to accomplish during his time in office.

City at work fixing potholes
MOUNT VERNON -- The street department recently filled a handful of potholes around the city with temporary patching material. Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis is encouraging city residents to contact the department if they have information on potholes around town.

DUBLIN -- They had a nine-point lead in the second quarter, but the members of the Mount Vernon High School boys basketball team let Dublin Jerome slip away in overtime on Friday, 62-54. Though the Yellow Jackets lost on the road, their effort against the Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division leader was quiet impressive.

FREDERICKTOWN -- There is always talk about how every boys basketball game is the Mid-Buckeye Conference is going to be a battle. Friday night turned out to be no different as Utica was able to escape Fredericktown with a 59-57 win in overtime.
