Visiting up high in Howard (VIDEO)
HOWARD -- Locals call it "the old red mill,"but until the 1970s it was the Howard Elevator, where customers walked in the front door, off U.S. 36, and trains and wagons pulled up at the back door to pick up and deliver grain and feed. Built into a hillside, the four-story building is the tallest structure in Howard, but visitors only discover that when they walk around back.

The YMCA of Mount Vernon hosted a Dance Dance Revolution competition on Saturday to give local youth the opportunity to show off their dance skills.

Lamb gets diploma 60 years after leaving high school
FREDERICKTOWN -- It's not easy to run a covert operation around a military veteran. Ask the Lamb family, and they'll confirm it's true. But with the cooperation and coordination of numerous relatives, the family surprised patriarch Russ Lamb on Saturday afternoon at the library in Fredericktown with the presentation of a diploma for graduation with Fredericktown High School's Class of 1948.

Schools, health dept. team up for safety
MOUNT VERNON -- School employees work hard to provide a clean and safe environment for children and the county health departments help with that task. Now new legislation, dubbed Jared's Law, has resulted in even closer collaboration between local school districts and the respective county health departments since it went into effect in September.

Wildcats outscore Yellow Jackets
NEWARK -- Despite a strong start offensively and defensively, it didn't translate into a win for the Mount Vernon High School boys basketball team on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets traveled to Newark to face the Wildcats in a nonconference matchup at Jimmy Allen Gymnasium.

Freddies knock off Colts
BELLVILLE -- Scoring only two points in the third quarter led to the undoing of the Clear Fork High School boys basketball team on Saturday night. Hosting Fredericktown in a nonconference game, the Colts fell, 47-23.

Scots beat rival Trojans
CENTERBURG -- The Highland Fighting Scots and Centerburg Trojans probably share one of the more amicable basketball rivalries in the area. A rivalry is, however, still a rivalry.
