Officials begin searching for clues to fire

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Fire Department and Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office will start searching for the cause of the Tuesday fire that destroyed Rivers Edge Hunting and Fishing, and consumed antique cars and auto memorabilia. The store is located at 306 W. Gambier St.

The building is owned by Gary Gray, who had the cars stored in the rear of the building. Tuesday afternoon, Mount Vernon Fire Chief Shawn Christy said equipment will be brought in today to remove roof beams that were twisted by the heat and are a safety hazard to anyone in the building. According to Christy, fire officials can then safely conduct the investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

While fighting the fire, the department’s tower truck shut down. Representatives of the Sutphen Fire Equipment Co. of Columbus, builders of the department’s truck, visited Mount Vernon on Tuesday and found the problem was a broken wire to the alternator. Sutphen began repairing the truck Tuesday.
