MVPD adds three to staff

MOUNT VERNON — Three new Mount Vernon police officers were sworn in Wednesday morning by Mayor Richard Mavis, in front of family and friends in City Council chambers.

Rex Young, 29, will start an 18-week training course Monday at the Ohio State Patrol Academy in Columbus. Police Capt. George Hartz explained that when an individual is not trained in, but is qualified for, police work, the city sends the officer for training.

Jeremiah Armstrong is 31 years old, and has been a Marion police officer since June 2003. Kyle Theibert, 25, took police training at Youngtown State University.

Armstrong and Theibert will start duty Feb. 17. New officers are on probation for one year from their date of hire.

The city now has 28 officers, two short of full strength.
