MOUNT VERNON — A 70-year-old Mount Vernon man died following an accident involving an all-terrain vehicle he was operating near his Old Delaware Road residence.
According to Knox County Sheriff David Barber, his office received a 9-1-1 call at 10:12 a.m. Friday reporting an accident involving an ATV rolling over a steep embankment at 9757 Old Delaware Road. Barber said 70-year-old Clarence E. Whyte Jr. of 9755 Old Delaware Road was operating the vehicle after he and his son had loaded salt into the bed due to Friday morning’s icy conditions.
Fire and emergency squads from the Central Ohio Joint Fire District, Fredericktown and Mount Vernon fire departments responded to the scene, along with sheriff’s deputies and detectives.
Barber said the vehicle slid backward and went down the embankment approximately 75 feet, ejecting Whyte.
Whyte was transported by the Central Ohio Joint Fire District squad to Knox Community Hospital, where he died a short time later. Knox County Coroner Dr. Jeffery Bowers ruled that Whyte’s death was accidental, the result of multiple trauma.
