Two appointed to Danville council

MOUNT VERNON — Danville Village Council appointed two new members when it met Monday night.

Jill Byers was appointed by Mayor Robert Dile, and has been assigned to chair the village finance committee. Brad Walls was appointed by unanimous vote of the council, and will chair the village water and wastewater committee. Walls’ appointment follows the resignation of council member Jean Stachler, who resigned two weeks ago for personal reasons.

Dile announced that the council is still looking to appoint three Danville residents to the planning committee. Any Danville resident interested in the position is asked to contact Dile’s office.

The council discussed creating and hosting a Web site for the village. Dile said he has contacted several Internet service providers and web designers; the council will discuss the matter further in April. Dile said a village Web site would help promote tourism to the area, and allow local residents to e-mail the mayor or council with their thoughts and opinions.

Village Administrator Robert Shipley told council that it may be necessary in the coming weeks to hire a firm to test the village’s water supply for leaks. Shipley said that for $1,500, a private firm would test all of Danville’s 67 fire hydrants, to spot leaks in the system. Shipley added that leaks in Danville’s aging water supply system have caused local consumption to increase from approximately 100,000 gallons per day to over 150,000 gallons per day. No date has been set for testing, although Shipley said he hoped to hire the testing firm in early spring.

Planning Committee chairman Jim Holmes announced that tonight’s scheduled planning meeting has been postponed until Feb. 19.

Due to the President’s Day holiday, the next village council meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 8 p.m.
