MOUNT VERNON — Besides making driving hazardous and forcing people to scramble to stay warm, winter weather has wreaked havoc on the schedules of every school in the area. One-hour or two-hour delays due to inclement conditions have progressed to closures for the full school day.
To meet the state requirement of a minimum number of days in session, most school districts have already planned to implement their make up schedules.
Clear Fork’s first scheduled makeup day is Friday, Feb. 15, so students there should plan to go to class. “We might not even be in session Friday,” said Superintendent Dan Freund. “If not, our make up days will be at the end of the school year. I know we can drive every day in June.”
Feb. 15 is also East Knox’s first scheduled make up day, followed by Monday, Feb. 18, President’s Day.
Highland and Johnstown-Monroe will be in session on the 18th as well, while Northridge and Centerburg won’t make up days until June. “We don’t change the schedule and try to make up calamity days during the school year,” said Centerburg’s secretary Cathy Hess. “People make plans for scheduled time off. We just go longer at the end of the school year.”
Superintendent Dan Humphrey said Tuesday was only the fourth day Fredericktown schools have closed this school year, so they will not have to be in session on Monday, unless the weather continues to be a problem the rest of this week.
Mount Vernon City Schools have not yet surpassed the allowable number of calamity days, so make up days in that district have not yet been “activated.” They would just be added to the end of the school year.
