Clinton supporter makes stop in MV

MOUNT VERNON — A large crowd listened as former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack stumped for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at Sips on Wednesday afternoon.

Vilsack was one of many supporters of the Democratic hopeful canvassing the state in an effort to help sway votes in Tuesday’s Primary.

“The east and west coast media don’t want to count your vote. I think it’s important for Ohio to say, ‘we do matter,’” Vilsack said. “Ohio is a microcosm of all the challenges this country faces and we want you to tell us if the debate has ended.

“I’m here to support Hillary Clinton. ... She’s an agent of change for the things that affect people’s lives. She’s the best qualified candidate to run in November.”

A good portion of the crowd wore Clinton stickers, but all were there to hear more about a possible president of the United States.

“I like to hear what each candidate has to say,” said Matt Eley, a homeschool student from Howard.

“[Vilsack] was articulate and political. ... But I’m not sure what he said will sway me,” said Bill Mustaine of Mount Vernon. “I was pleased to see all the young people here, though.”

After giving a short speech on Clinton, Vilsack answered questions from the audience.

“You find out more about a politician when they fail. In 1993, Hillary got involved with the health care issue. She did not get what she wanted, but she’s continued the fight. She’ll continue to fight for you today,” Vilsack said.

The former governor also visited Newark during his trip and told the crowd how pleased he was with Ohio.

“I wanted to thank you, first, for what you’ve done for the Democrats in the nation. You’ve elected a great governor in Ted Strickland. He’s a national leader,” Vilsack said.
