Confusion surrounds primary vote

By R. Eric Burdette, News Staff Reporter
Saturday, March 01, 2008

MOUNT VERNON — According to Rita Yarman, director of the Knox County Board of Elections, there has been some confusion about voting in the upcoming primary on Tuesday. In particular, she said, the Knox County Board of Elections has received questions from registered Republican voters wondering if they can vote for a Democratic presidential candidate.

The answer is yes.

Likewise, registered Democratic voters can vote in the upcoming primary for a Republican candidate.

In addition, today is the final day to request an absentee ballot to be mailed to your home.

According to Yarman, the board cannot legally mail out absentee ballots after noon today. Any registered voter who wants an absentee ballot mailed must contact the board of elections no later than today at noon.

The board of elections office will also be open for no-fault absentee voting on Monday. It will not be open for no-fault absentee voting on March 4, the date of the election; voters must report to their polling location to cast their votes.

However, if voters have received absentee ballots previously they may be dropped off at the board of elections office on Monday. In cases requiring the hospitalization of a voter on Monday, the board will issue absentee ballots, which are to be returned the same day.

For more information about this or any other voting issue, call the Knox County Board of Elections at 393-6716, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
