Speeding a concern of Danville council

DANVILLE — According to Danville Mayor Robert Dile, a proposed Danville Visitor’s Center will probably not be completed until 2009 or 2010.

At Monday’s Village Council meeting, Dile said he had met with the county commissioners and expects the county will come up with the money for the center through the state’s Scenic Byway grant. The proposed visitor’s center is slated to be built near the entrance to Memorial Park. According to Dile, the building is designed to be 24-by-50 feet, and will contain restrooms, vending machines, information on local businesses, local artwork and possibly an ATM. Dile said an ATM machine and vending would help offset maintenance costs to the building.

The council also discussed ways to encourage local drivers to mind speed postings and crosswalks near the school zone in the morning and afternoon hours. Council member Jim Holmes said he is concerned for children’s safety when motorists speed past crosswalks, unaware the children are waiting to cross. Holmes said he, a few teachers and village employees have donated their time in the mornings and afternoons to man the crosswalks and help children to cross safely.

Holmes said that any responsible local residents willing to donate 20 minutes of their time in the mornings or afternoons would be greatly appreciated. He asked that anyone interested contact the school or the mayor’s office.
