Homeschoolers make good use of NIE pages

FREDERICKTOWN — Start with an apparent crime, throw in some arcane clues, stir in a class of curious youngsters, add a dash of historical references and you have the Mount Vernon News’ chapter story, “History Thief.” The story was written by Newspaper in Education coordinator Michelle Hartman to celebrate the program’s 10th year in the area and to commemorate Knox County’s Bicentennial.

Ruth Douglas, a homeschooling parent who has subscribed to the NIE program for the past decade, uses “History Thief” to encourage reading and comprehension skills and to supplement lessons in the county’s history. The mystery serves as a good review of the Knox County facts the children have already learned.
