Judge presides over local court cases

MOUNT VERNON — Common Pleas Judge Otho Eyster presided over several cases on Friday.

Donald L. Sapp Jr., 42, Danville, pleaded guilty to one count of domestic violence, a fourth-degree felony. Sapp admitted in court that on Aug. 5, 2007, he and his live-in girlfriend got into a fight over a can of soda. Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher said the girlfriend sustained bruises to her face and arms. This is Sapp’s second conviction for domestic violence since 2005. He is scheduled for sentencing on April 18 where he faces a possible 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Lisa M. Poole, 45, Mount Vernon, pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in cocaine, a fifth-degree felony. Poole said in court that someone paid her $100 to deliver a cigarette pack containing cocaine. Poole is scheduled for sentencing on April 18 where she faces up to 12 months in prison and a $2,500 fine.

The case of Charles R. Hawkins Jr. was continued one week after court officials discovered that Hawkins was under the influence of alcohol when his case was called. A portable breathalyzer test revealed that Hawkins’ blood alcohol level was 0.027. Hawkins was originally scheduled to plead guilty to charges of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor. Prosecutors say that Hawkins owned two compact discs containing child pornography. Eyster warned Hawkins that if it appeared he was under the influence the next time he appeared in court that his bond would be revoked.
