Local heroes to be honored at Red Cross breakfast
MOUNT VERNON -- The fifth annual American Red Cross of Knox County Hero's Breakfast will be held March 19 at the Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene. Angel An, weekend news anchor for 10TV News, will emcee once again at this year's event. The Mount Vernon News and WNZR radio have teamed up as this year's Heroes media sponsors.

Utica's Walton earns boys honor
MOUNT VERNON -- A year ago at this time, Utica High School senior Zack Walton was recovering from surgery to repair a collapsed lung that ended his junior season three-quarters of the way through. Still, his 278 points (18.5 average) were enough to win him the All-Area Player of the Year award.

Freddies'Levering named top girls player
MOUNT VERNON -- From a very young age, Fredericktown High School senior Whitney Levering knew what she wanted to be -- a basketball player. Years of hard work in the gym have paid off for Levering, who has earned the 2008 Mount Vernon News All-Area Girls Basketball Player of the Year honor.

Edick leads nation as freshman
MARIETTA -- At 5-foot-10, Marietta College freshman guard Nathan Edick may not be immediately recognizable as a basketball player. His shooting, however, speaks for itself.
