JOHNSTOWN — Members of the Johnstown-Monroe school board are still hopeful that one of the two levies on the March 4 ballot has been approved by the voters.
Treasurer Tammy Woods said unofficial counts indicate the 5-mill permanent improvement levy failed by only eight votes; the board is optimistic that when the 70 provisional ballots are tallied and certified by the board of elections, the scales will tip to the “passed” side. The ballots must be certified by April 2.
Woods said the revenue from that levy is urgently needed to repair and maintain the school buildings. Specifically, she said, there are major roof problems — and leaks — at the high school and Searfoss Elementary.
After an early executive session to discuss personnel, the board accepted the donation of $16,250 to the band and athletic departments from the George Edward Durell Foundation, and approved routine fiscal actions.
Regarding personnel, the board accepted the resignation of band director Marc Zirille, effective at the end of the 2007-08 school year. It also approved the voluntary transfer of Jackie Warner from food service manager to food service employee, beginning with the 2008-09 school year. The board advanced Jennifer Cartwright on the salary schedule and tabled a resolution to approve administrative contracts scheduled to begin Aug. 1.
Before going into a lengthy executive session to discuss upcoming negotiations, the board approved a number of new and revised policies in order to comply with changes in state and federal regulations. No further action was taken after the executive session.
The next regular meeting of the Johnstown Board of Education will be held Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the village council chambers.
