Taking it to the Streets
How do you feel about county employees getting a gas card as an incentive for joining a wellness program?
I don’t know. I suppose it’d be a good incentive to be
healthy and stay fit. In the end it might save the county
some money; the employees might be healthier.

certainly an incentive right now.

It’s important that the county employees get involved in a
wellness program. If that’s what the commissioners choose to
do as an incentive, that’s fine. I would hope they would
join without any [incentive] because it’s in their own best
interest.

I think that it will cost the county too much money. The
employees should WANT to join a wellness program on their
own without having to get a "bribe" to do it. The
reward would be better health.

This is the kind of government insider perks that gets me
all ryled up. Us non county workers are foced to pay our own
heating bills. It ain't right that them county people get to
hand over some free gas card to the bill collector just
because they decided to get themselves some doctoring.
What's next a free cigarette stamp for county workers!

Wellness programs provide many benefits to the employees,
their family, and their employer (the county).
/>For once, quit looking for the conspiracy, and look at the
benefits. If the county can encourage workers to live
healthier lives, in the end it makes for less cost all
around. If it takes a gas card to get them interested and
once they join, they like it...GREAT!

Glad to
see that the county is trying to find ways to help better
the employees.

If it encourages people to take better care of themselves
and get proactive check ups then it is a good idea. I've
seen the county spend money on far worse ideas.

Why should taxpayers backroll government employees to get
off their fat asses. Lord knows it's not like they work an

gov't road crews lately?

Seems to me that county employees have a job just like
non-county employees. Non-county employees continue to
absorb all the increases, and now they are paying for county
employees to get gas cards--just because they keep
themselves healthier. What do non-county employees get but
more increases? --Doesn't make much sense to me!

A healthier employee take less sick days per year (which the
county pays for sick days), making the employee more
productive. Also if all employees are working their normal
scheduled hours, overtime could decline for the year. The
cost of the cards would be a cheap way to get some of them
healthier.

I think we should all be accountable and resposible for

what they should already be doing is another expense to
taxpayers.

I feel a little p.o. by some of the coments against the gas
program for country workers. Me and the wife both drive,

really competed with putting food on the table. I think it
great that we get a break, after all my taxes goes to paving
you city folk streets in brick.

To the person who submitted the previous post, put up or
shut up. Leave the town and do the rest a favor. The idea or
creating a healthier employee and work place is marvelous.
Studies show that people who live healthier lives are more
productive and their out look on life is more positive, if
it takes a gas card to do it then great. I would put money
on it that the people who oppose/can't wait to move lead an
unhealthy and un-productive life style. I feel that if the
county workers are healthier and happier one would suggest
that the work that the perform is going to be more
successful, I don’t know about you, but if my street or my
garbage, or my water line, or whatever county problem exists
and it gets fixed quicker and more efficiently because of a
gas card and wellness incentive then bravo!!

Just who is determining what the definition of
"wellness" really is. Medicine bases everything
on an average person basis and goes to extremes if every
person does not fall under the category they determine as
wellness. People are too different and from all walks of
life, and therefore, the medical definition of wellness for
one person most likely will not fit the next person. As a
result, many people are actually being discriminated
against, paying higher medical costs etc. THIS SHOULD NOT
BE HAPPENING. So you give them a gas card IF they can
achieve what medicine determines as "wellness" on
an average and deny them other benefits if they cannot
produce the results medicine will expect of them. WRONG!
People there is more behind this offer than meets the eye.
Walk carefully into this situation, question everything and
learn all about the offer before you submit to anything.

see food prices going up and the county is not giving the
people on food stamps enough to get them through 2 weeks!
Why help them? This is the craziest thing I have ever heard

I think this would be a good time to evaluate what is
important. We all know that medical issues are better left
in the hands of the Lord and not some doctor. As for gas
cards perhaps people should look at alternative forms of
transportation such as horses or mules. You'll find they
cost far less and provide much more enjoyment than an
automobile.

Honest Abe + the gang,

Let's be honest, Abe! It
is a good idea to promote the wellness of our county
employees...but why just them!? I am a person who works at
a body "wellness" facility and have to make a
drive to get there. Now, I work at the stinkin place and
why shouldn't my job allow me to get a gas card!?!?! So
where's mine? After all, people like myself help people
stay fit and healthy and if it weren't for us keeping our
facility up and running the people would look worse than
they are now...which we all know we're living in one of the
fattest nations on Earth.

As you can tell, I
oppose singling out just the county employees to get gas
cards. Who was the stupid idiot that came up with that
idea....I think you left a TON of people who have
better/worse/equal jobs than them there bud.
/>Gas Card!?!?! LOL common! Let's get real. I am
definately for the wellness...but everybody has
choices...promote the wellness part a different way and give
them the opportunity to stay fit. Jeez.

Gee, people are too stupid and lazy to actually care about
their own well being but give them a hand out and
wow!....stand back because NOW they'll start to care. />
pretty pathetic.

Exactly how many people
will be filling their tanks on the way to get a bag of crap
from McDonald's or Burger King? Or a pack of smokes? />What is the point of a "wellness" program is you
are just stuffing your gut with fast food? and inhaling
cancer causing cigs? Don't get me wrong, it's a personal
choice....I really don't care what you do, but lets get
real....if people don't care enough about their own well
being for the sake of them selves and their families....too
bad...when they die it is just another way of thinning the
heard.

I think it is a poor idea, if you
can't take care of yourself for the sake of yourself then
that is a mindset and no bribery is going to change
that....something like that starts on the inside.

Given that the average taxpayer ultimatly pays for the gas
card, perhaps the county should use reduced out of pocket
expense for health coverage for the employee..or perhaps a
deductible waiver. Today when so many are struggling to put
gas in thier vehicle this does not seem fair. Other options
could be incorporated.

are better if they are left in the Lord's hands." I
think God can help us in EVERY aspect of our life, but he
also gave us common sense that says He gave us Doctors to

things God gives us makes sense to me..even using Doctors..

of course city employees would love it not like they dont
get enough perks as it is, they get discounts at some local
resturants ect. so now give them gas cards so they dont have
to spend more of their precious money on gas. What about
everyone else that does not work for the county ect. now we
will have to pick the tab up for that also. Why not give
something for the NON County workers or City employees I am
sure I am not the only one that would agree on this

I think it is rediculous..I commute daily to Columbus where
is my gas card. The extra stress of driving and weather
cause me health issues at times. On top of mounting gas
prices. I spend over a 100 a week to fuel my car. No one
pays me to drive to work. I even pay for my own healthcare.
I will not pay so county employees can drive 15-20 minutes
to work. maybe the county van should car-pool the employees
in if gas is such a large issue.

I think if they are joingin a wellness plan, they should not
get gas cards. They should further be encouraged to walk or
bike to work. What is the point of a physical wellness
program if then drive around in a car. If we are saying
excersize is good for you physcially and mentally, then they
should be encrouaged to do more by not using their cars. The
taxpayers should also not fit the bill for this.

Every county employee pays the same taxes as everyone else.
Also, we live in a free society which means that all you
folks that work for walmart or kmart or burger king have the
same ability to apply for government jobs as the people who
work for the goverenment. We all make fun of Governement
workers, but atleast they arent on government subsides like
most of this town. food stamps, housing urban developement
ect. We are talking about an insentive that would clearly
better their lives improve their health which leads to less
sick days and more productivity. This has been proven by
many fortune 500 companies, many major universities are
doing this as well. as are many school districts. The
