By Anton Hepler, News Staff Reporter

GAMBIER — Knox County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for the person responsible for a break-in early Friday morning at the Kenyon Athletic Center. According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office report, an unidentified male suspect used a stolen truck to attempt to steal an ATM machine from the lobby of the athletic center.

According to the report, a black Ford F-150 pickup truck was stolen from the 600 block of South Richards Street, Danville, sometime late Thursday or early Friday morning. The owner of the truck said that in addition to leaving some clothes and personal identification in the vehicle, he may have also left the keys in the truck with the doors unlocked.

Mark Ellis, news director for Kenyon College, said two campus custodians witnessed the entire break-in. Ellis said the suspect smashed the main glass doors to the lobby of the center and, using a dolly, attempted to pry out the ATM and carry it away. The suspect also used a metal trash can to try to break into the center’s snack bar before leaving the lobby empty-handed. Campus safety officers saw the suspect get back in the stolen truck and drive off on Duff Street toward Ohio 229.

Deputies at the scene tied the stolen truck to the break-in after they discovered items in the parking lot allegedly from the stolen truck. The report stated deputies found the truck owner’s clothes and identification allegedy thrown out of the vehicle by the suspect.

The two custodians who witnessed the crime described the suspect as male, approximately 5 foot 6 inches and slight of build. He was seen wearing black pants, a black hooded shirt, a camouflage jacket and a black mask.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Knox County Sheriff’s Office at 397-3333.
