Vernons expected to plead guilty to selling prescription pain pills
MOUNT VERNON -- A Mount Vernon couple was expected to plead guilty this morning to charges of selling prescription pain pills to an undercover informant.

Heating system to be checked in county building
MOUNT VERNON -- Roger Shooter, director of Jobs and Family Services, met with the Knox County Board of Commissioners on Monday morning. The meeting was the commissioners'only one of the day open to the public.

Council passes several pieces of legislation related to infrastructure
MOUNT VERNON -- City Council passed several pieces of legislation on Monday that allow the administration to move forward with infrastructure projects, including improvement projects in the area of Blackjack Road, the rebuilding of a portion of Curtis Street and the Lowe's crossover roadway.

Council discusses downtown parking enforcement
MOUNT VERNON -- City Council discussed whether or not to continue enforcing the two-hour parking limit in spaces in the downtown area during a committee meeting on Monday.

Herald's undergoes complete renovation
MOUNT VERNON -- Herald's Appliances and Electronics on South Main Street got a complete face lift about a month ago, according to store owner Phil Herald. He said the inside was basically torn apart and put back together again in more visually pleasing fashion, to wow customers and to show off the latest technology.

Johnstown receives $1.1 million pledge
JOHNSTOWN -- On Monday, the Johnstown-Monroe Board of Education accepted a $1.1 million pledge from the Chambers Family Foundation to upgrade the high school athletic complex, originally built in 1974. Athletic Booster John Neighbarger of Key Properties will serve as construction manager for the project.

Fan overheats, sets fire to roof
MOUNT VERNON -- A ventilation fan overheated and set fire to the roof at The Laurels nursing center about 8:10 this morning. None of the 25 residents in the northwest wing of the facility were in danger, although all were removed to another part of the building. Staff member Alice Cree said the residents even had their breakfasts.

Moldova doctors tour KCH
MOUNT VERNON -- Four medical doctors, participants in the Open World Program and hosted by the International Visitors Council, visited Knox Community Hospital recently to learn about health care in Knox County.

Patrolman cited for accident
MOUNT VERNON -- A Mount Vernon Police Officer was cited on Friday for a red light violation after allegedly causing an accident at the intersection of West Chestnut Street and Ohio 13.

W.Va. man killed in accident
MOUNT VERNON -- Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash that occurred at approximately 3:46 a.m. today. The crash involved a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo. The crash occurred on U.S. 36 near Mount Liberty in Liberty Township, Knox County.

Getting a taste of Knox County
MOUNT VERNON -- The Country Club Retirement Campus building was packed with people on Monday evening for its A Taste of Knox County event. Mary Gillan, marketing assistant, said the event is the first at CCRC, but probably won't be the last.

Yellow Jackets bash Dublin Jerome
DUBLIN -- The road was kind to the Mount Vernon High School baseball team on Monday night. The visiting Yellow Jackets defeated Dublin Jerome in an Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division matchup, 5-2.

Celtics edge Jackets, 2-1
DUBLIN -- Despite jumping out to an early advantage, the Mount Vernon High School softball team never really found any momentum. That lack of momentum cost the Yellow Jackets in the form of a 2-1 loss to Dublin Jerome on Monday afternoon.

Mount Vernon downs Aces
MOUNT VERNON -- Things just keep getting better for the Mount Vernon High School boys tennis team. Winners of their first five matches, the Yellow Jackets picked up win No. 6 against the visiting Granville Blue Aces, 4-1.

17-year old wins national prize; Fawcett local winner
MOUNT VERNON -- For 77-year old Gordon "Dynie"Fawcett of Utica, entering the 2008 BRACKETBUCKS competition was something of a habit. Fawcett, who has been entering the Mount Vernon News bracket competition for some time, finally got his habit to pay off.
