Red Cross director visits Danville

DANVILLE — Dan Werner, director of the Knox County American Red Cross, visited Danville City Council on Monday to inform the members of services his organization can provide to the community. Werner, a Knox County resident for 22 years, assumed the top position with the local Red Cross three months ago, and said he was visiting all villages in the county.

Werner said his organization has responded to 28 fires so far this year and that it was on track to surpass last year’s number of 31. Werner told the council about several programs the Red Cross is offering, including pet CPR lessons, blood drives, first aid and CPR classes. He said the Red Cross is the only organization authorized to contact military servicemen and women serving overseas.

“I’m just here to tell you who we are, what we do, and that we’re here if you need us,” he said.

Danville Mayor Robert Dile told the council he had discussed the creation of a village Web site with a local contractor; council agreed to invite contractors to come to a meeting to make their proposals.

“I’d like to get someone to talk to us about costs and what a Web page could do for our village,” said Dile. “I’d like to just revisit [the idea], get some info, and go on from there.”

Dile said the village had a great turnout for its annual Spring Cleanup day, and Village Administrator Robert Shipley reported that the village collected over four dump trucks of trash.
